A Seaman’s Book or Seaman’s Continuous Discharge Certificate or a Seaman’s Identification and Record Book is all one and the same. This Seaman;’s Book is a Seafarers Identity Document which is issued for the purpose of providing the holder with Identity papers for travel to / from a assigned vessel or pursuant to instructions by the Master of such a vessel and provides a record of the holder’s sea service.

This Seaman’s Book is issued in conformity with the provision of ILO Convention and the Seafarers Identity Document Convention.

This Seaman;s Book is not a passport and is issued without prejudice to and in no way affects the National Status of the Holder.

The Special qualification certificate which may be entered within the Seaman’s Book are being issued in conformity to various international conventions including STCW as ammended. The Able Seafarer AB Deck, Ordinary Seaman, Bosun and General purpose – 1 are qualified as Ratings forming part of a Navigational Watch ; and Fireman / Watertender, Able Seafarer Engine, Oiler, Motorman, Electrician and GP General Purpose – 1 are qualified as Ratings forming part of an Engine Room Watch.

To apply for a Seafarer Discharge Book you will need to:

A. Complete the required Application Form;

B. Enclose a copy of any Certificate of Competency held (only for specified licenced ranks);

C. Enclose copies of your valid STCW “Basic Training” certificates issued under STCW Chapter VI (Emergency, occupational safety, security, medical care and survival functions). As a minimum you must hold the following certificates of proficiency –

>> Personal Survival Techniques (PST);

>> Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (FPFF);

>> Elementary First Aid (EFA); and

>> Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (PSSR);

AND

>> Ship Security Awareness (SSA) or Security Training for Seaferers with Designated Security Duties (STSDSD)

D. Enclose a copy of your current passport identification and address page if any (you do not need to send your original passport);

E. Enclose a copy of your valid Seafarer Medical Certificate; and

F. Send two original passport style photographs.
